Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies

It has been some time since short-drama apps were a niche curiosity. Sensor Tower recorded about $700M in global in-app revenue for the category in Q1 2025, and the US accounted for 49% of it. By Q1 2026 the quarterly figure stood at about $750M, and full-year 2025 came in at roughly $2.8–3B. If you have ever searched drama app a store for a short reels app, you have encountered at least one of the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. Vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall make them seem identical on the surface. The differences lie underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and they change what you pay and where you can watch. Six rounds, one winner per round: that is the format, and we relied on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Side-by-Side Comparison Grid

This grid puts the full field on one screen before the rounds start. Prices track the US App Store as of September 2026, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. The install counts are drawn from each app’s Google Play listing. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We would rather leave a gap than guess, so wherever no reliable source released the figure, the cell says “not reported”. The grid is the scoreboard, and the rounds below provide the commentary.

Round 1: Who Owns Them and How Big They Are

The incumbent is ReelShort, and it continues to carry the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. MPA also estimates its 2025 revenue at $785M and expects $1.05B for 2026. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and holds about 21%. By Q1 2026 the two were even at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first, although in Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M. DramaWave (often mistyped as “dreamwave”) is the youngest app here, but it already has about 13%, and reportedly its annualized revenue topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax seems to be the same app as Jiuzhou Culture’s ShortTV, and it operates from Hong Kong. My Drama, the smallest of the group with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. Just outside this lineup, GoodShort holds, for context, about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, by a narrow margin, on market share.

Round 2: Price

The apps seem most alike in this round. In the US App Store, ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell a weekly pass at about $19.99, and each one renews automatically. Beyond that, ShortMax lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The standout is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Since four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass total about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the better buy for steady viewers. Round winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Prices vary by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may differ.

Round 3: Free Ways to Watch

Free viewing is the topic where the marketing turns loud and the details grow thin. According to ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad opens up two premium episodes. A seven-day check-in streak yields 100+ coins, but free reward coins usually expire, while paid coins do not. Looking for the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying? ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Never treat look-alike sites, modded APKs or “unlimited coins” generators as a safe shortcut; they are unofficial, so stay away. Only third-party guides list DramaBox’s exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, though the app has free options too. Round winner: ReelShort, by a clear margin.

Round 4: Platforms

These apps genuinely diverge on the question of screens. iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android are all covered by ReelShort, which also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. Because its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax also offers web browsing. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app. With an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama plays the trump card. If a shorts app on your phone is all you need, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, with My Drama taking the living room.

Round 5: Catalog and Originals

In raw numbers, ShortMax is in a league of its own. The app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. By January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, and most of them were dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave says it has 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and according to reports, more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. On recognizable hits, ReelShort wins, with The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s response. Because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most intriguing pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, simply on volume.

Round 6: Perks and Fine Print

DramaWave comfortably takes this one. No other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing, while its App Store listing advertises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video. The next most useful perk, for viewers who move between phone and laptop, is ReelShort’s cross-device sync. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription on any of these apps, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Winner: DramaWave, with room to spare.

The Final Picks: Best For

The right choice depends on how you watch, since no single short drama app wins every round. ReelShort is best for web viewing, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Being the one app here with a verified tvOS version, and the only one with Fox-produced originals, My Drama is best for Apple TV. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. Combining offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan, DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers. Best for backing the current revenue leader is DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. If you are tempted by all five, pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
